Walton Shield Final – 2026 Competition Report
The final of the 2026 Walton Shield, our mixed‑pairs matchplay knockout competition for players aged 55 and over, was contested this year by James & Karen Pearson and Jay & Sandra Davis.
With nine teams entering the 2026 event, each pair navigated three competitive rounds to earn their place in what proved to be a closely fought and entertaining final.
The match was played in bright, pleasant afternoon weather, with sunshine and temperatures between 18–21°C.
Rainfall the previous day had softened the normally firm summer surfaces, reducing the harsh bounces we have all become accustomed to during this dry season. Even so, the fairways still offered plenty of run, rewarding well‑struck shots while demanding careful judgement throughout the round.
James and Karen opened strongly, winning the 1st hole and extending their lead on the 4th. Jay and Sandra responded on the 5th, taking advantage after both James and Karen lost their balls. A further win on the 8th allowed James and Karen to complete the front nine 2 up.
Jay and Sandra mounted an impressive comeback on the back nine, securing the 10th and 11th to bring the match level.
Although they lost the 12th, their momentum continued, winning the 13th, 14th, 16th, and 17th holes to close out the match with a 2&1 victory.
The final was notable not only for its competitive quality but also for the friendly and courteous manner in which both pairs approached the match, reflecting the values of the Walton Shield and the wider club.
