Vets Trophy Final: 17th September 2024
On a bright and sunny September day, Paul Thomas and Wyn Wattley (cover picture on the first tee) contested the final of the Vets Trophy for those senior members over 70. With only one shot separating the two player’s handicaps, the final was well-matched and so it proved.
A cagey start to the proceedings saw the contestants half the first two holes before Paul established a two-shot lead over holes 3 and 4, winning both by the odd shot. Wyn used his single shot to secure a half on the Stroke Index 1 fifth hole before Paul edged the 6th by the odd shot again.
A series of halved holes followed as they both produced consistent golf with Paul, ultimately reaching the halfway point with a 3-shot lead.
The 10th hole was halved before Wyn ran into a spot of bunker trouble on the 11th enabling Paul to extend his lead to 4 holes. From there, despite Wyn’s best efforts, the holes were halved with Paul holing a putt from off the green on 14 and then holing a 10ft putt on 15 to half the hole and close out the match 4&3.
Congratulations to both players for a match featuring good golf and played in the true spirit of the sport.
Paul will be the first recipient of the shiny new Vets Trophy at the Presentation Evening in November.
Our thanks are extended to Ian Renhard for this report and for acting as the match referee
