Spring Scramble Saturday 26th April

BIRDIES GALORE IN THIS YEAR’S SPRING SCRAMBLE

Aston Villa’s appearance in the FA Cup semi-final led to reduced numbers in this year’s Spring Scramble, played on Saturday 26th April.  However, the 23 teams who competed enjoyed a dry day in the sunshine, and better fortune than Villa.

Out second, the quartet of John Wall, Robert Cowdell, Peter Hogan and Barry Smart posted a creditable net 53.6 which held the lead for an hour until Matt Parry, Paul Stanford, Andrew Rose and Steve Gurmin edged them out with a net 53.2.

By the halfway point of the competition, Christian Shotton, Scott Harris, Dave James and Ian Sayce had returned a net 51.6 to take the lead.

Their advantage didn’t last long as Shaun Bowen, Ryan Brown, Rich Alsop and Jeff Rushton recorded a net 50.8, a score later matched by Ryan Coy, Ian Barber, Ray Cole and Michelle Parry.  There were 17 birdies recorded between these two teams, across 10 different holes.

With net scores level, the competition was decided on the back 9 holes.  Both had scored 30, but Shaun’s team had a net 25.4 for those holes against 25.9 for Ryan’s team.  The photo shows Jeff, Rich and Shaun holding the trophy.

The Bowen family took a further prize when Mike, ably supported by Paul Read, Sam Newnes and Micky Burrows, secured third place with a net 51.5.

Ryan’s team did claim the Best Gross prize with their 59 edging out Christian’s team on a better back 3 holes – 9 versus 10 shots.

My thanks to Gary McCartney and Carolyn Fox for handing out all the scorecards and checking early bird scores.  And a big thanks to you for keeping play moving.  While some groups didn’t quite make the 4 hours and 10-minute target, they weren’t far off.
