Senior Mens Pairs Open

BROMSGROVE PAIRS DOMINATE THE SENIOR MEN’S OPEN

After a week of wall-to-wall sunshine and temperatures in the 20s, the weather gods decided that the early starters in the Senior Men’s Pairs Open, played on Thursday 15th May, would have to layer up.   Temperatures had dropped, but it was the biting wind that forced many to wear up to four layers, woolly hats and warm trousers.  However, as the day wore on, the sun made an appearance, and temperatures reached the mid-20s.  Cue the removal of several layers.

The early leaders were Robert Nicholls and Anthony Mason of Sedgley with 41pts but 40 minutes later a better back 9 of 22pts put Simon Appleby and Deryck Hall in pole position.  They knew their lead would not last as 45pts has been the winning score in recent years.  Sure enough, in came Richard Fox and Paul Sherborne with 46pts …. and very big smiles.

As that score was unlikely to be beaten attention shifted to what score would take the remaining prizes.  Ivor Woods and Mike Pitt scored 43pts to secure second place on countback from the Cirencester pairing of Adrian Marchant and Martin Dyer.

For an hour it seemed that Andrew F Lee and Steve Allerston were going to claim fourth place with 42pts, but they were then pipped by Dave Ellerton and David Jackson on countback.  Could they hold on?  The answer was no as the very last pairing of David James and Rich Alsop snatched the final prize place with a better back 9 of 23pts.

In all, 14 pairs scored 40pts or more, 11 of which were Bromsgrove members.  As six of all pairs scored 42pts or more, the players who contributed on nine holes or more will have their cards assessed and, possibly, their handicaps adjusted.

Thanks go to the green keeping team for their work on presenting the course in good condition, to the clubhose team for their hosptality and to Midland Golf for donating prizes for the raffle.

Carolyn Fox and Sharon Easton Pollock were on the Registration Desk to hand over cards, food vouchers and to charm everyone into entering the raffle, and to act as Course Marshals. But the Club’s main thanks must go to Gary McCartney, ably assisted by Ian Renhard, who co-ordinated this year’s Open from start to finish in exemplary fashion.

We hope to welcome you back to BGC in the near future, please follow this link for our other opens https://visitors.brsgolf.com/bromsgrove#/open-competitions
