Senior Captains Cup

On Saturday, we were worried that the Senior Captain’s Cup scheduled for Tuesday 6th July was going to be washed out as the BBC weather forecast was showing an 80%+ chance of rain for the duration of play.  By Monday that had fallen to around 25%, but as it transpired the only rain that fell did so as the final group was coming down the 18th.  We were very fortunate.

Congratulations to Bob Hodges who aced the 3rd hole during the event for a nett zero and five Stableford points.  It was Bob’s third hole in one, the last coming at the 11th hole in the Club Championship a few years ago.  He graciously shared the customary bottle of whisky which comes with such a momentous achievement.

Last year the final grouping produced the winners of the competition, and it did so again this year.  Tim Jones and Ian Binks dovetailed beautifully to score 50pts, five ahead of the field.  The only blemish on their card – a single point – came at the 8th where they both found the trees, one left and one right.  As well as the Cup, which they retain for the year and which they’ll get engraved and polished to a dazzling shine, they each won £30 of Midland Golf vouchers.

In second place with 45pts were Roger Beardmore and Bob Hodges who beat Ken Garbett and Wyn Wattley on back 6 countback. They each win £20 and £10 of Midland Golf vouchers respectively.  Until the last group handed over their card, it looked as though Simon Appleby and John Sidaway might collect a prize but they had to settle for fourth place.

It was a double disappointment for John as he looked nailed on to win nearest the pin at the 7th when his tee shot arced onto the green to within 8ft of the pin.  Then along came Graham Kinley whose Exocet tee shot was heading for the trees at the back of the green when it thumped the pin and landed 6ft to the side.  The pin was still reverberating when Graham reached the green.   Nearest the pin in two at the 13th was won by Gary McCartney while Steve Levett was closest to the pin at the 17th.  All three gentlemen won a sleeve of golf balls.

The results sheet is attached as is a picture of the winning pair flanked by Deryck Hall and Wyn Wattley, Seniors Captain.  Thanks to Steve Levett for his photography skills.

Thanks to everyone for taking part in the event.  We trust you enjoyed the slightly different format; hopefully, one pair will ensure they read the instructions on how to complete the card when they play next year. 😊
