Senior Captain’s Away Day, 27th July 2026

Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club

There were several attractions to Cleobury Mortimer GC for this year’s Senior Captain’s Away Day, not least it’s beautiful setting and choice of 3 superbly laid out 9-hole courses, but also the on-site Lodges which could be (and were!) booked for overnight stays, and the fact that the Club’s inclusion in Network Golf meant that they were able to offer a very competitive deal.

The weather held, and in fact rather than scorchingly hot, it was a very pleasant warm day, making the play very comfortable for all, with a light breeze to keep us cool at times. The day had been planned with the addition of some ‘fun’ games, namely a novelty Chipping Competition under cover of Dave’s pop-up gazebo (in case of burning sun or pouring rain, neither of which plagued us), and a ‘Golf Croquet’ putting competition, set up on the putting green. Everyone took part in these as teams and individuals, and this added to the enjoyment of the day, with prizes also being awarded.

The 9-hole courses chosen were Badgers Sett and Deer Park, giving us our 18 hole competition, but card markers had to think carefully, as holes were numbered 1 to 9 on each course, rather than having 1-18, so Stroke Indexes had to be applied carefully (all was in the day’s instructions), with teams of 4 in a 4BBB Mixed Tee Stableford being employed. Just to complicate it further, team balls were issued which counted double points, with additional team balls available for purchase (teams had to return a ball at the end, so a lost ball would mean not qualifying), with all proceeds from the sales going to the Captains’ Charities of Parkinsons UK and Alzheimer’s Society.

Leading up to the day, we were lucky to have 15 ladies and 45 men, hence 15 teams all with 3 men and 1 lady. Unfortunately, 1 lady had to drop out just beforehand, but thankfully Simon Appleby was able to take her place, on the understanding that he wore a dress (though I’m told he wasn’t seen with it on). He was rewarded at the end with a ‘golden balls’ prize as he apparently took a bit of a ribbing!

After the golf, a tasty meal of Steak & Ale Pie followed by Strawberries & Ice Cream was followed by the Prizegiving. 6 Team prizes were available, and a very close-run thing for the lower places saw scores of 107 (on countback), 108,109 and 110 then a jump to 117 and an exceptional score of 128 by the eventual winning team of Angela Smith, Gerry Moxon, Roger Lanckham and Trevor Grosvenor.

Chris McHale also picked something up as “The Oldest Swinger in Town” (snippet of Fred Wedlock’s hit was aired to those present).
