Senior Captains’ Away Day 2024

On a beautiful Summer’s Day 62 intrepid golfers from Bromsgrove ventured into Saddlers’ country to play The Walsall Golf Club’s Mckenzie designed Golf Course. They were rewarded with good weather, good golf, good company and superb hospitality.

The format of the day was a Mixed AMM with the added benefit of a Magic Ball donated by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, one of this year’s Captains’ charities, scoring double! Those teams that managed their scoring with the Magic Ball were able to increase their scores to good effect. Taking home the main prize was the team of Anne Wakelam, Pete Shipway, Graham Solomon and John Leach who scored an impressive 133 Stableford points, beating the team of Bea Berry Lee Machin, Tim Jones and Chris McHale into second place. Deryck Hall led the team with the most Endeavour for the second year running, each taking home a copy of Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnson’s aptly named autobiography “Golf is Hard”.

The covering photograph shows the winning team in the Front Row, L-R  Graham, Peter, Anne and John in the Background Seniors Captain Ian and Lady Captain Sharon.

Nearest the pin in two for the Ladies was won by Lesley Ford with Alison Dickson picking up the Nearest the Line Drive on hole 18. For the Gentlemen, Dave Kelley won nearest the pin and Ian Renhard picked up the Nearest the Line Drive, ironically after spending most of the day hunting for his tee shots in the trees.

The day was rounded off with a two-course meal and the ever-popular “Everyone Wins” raffle which left one member wishing he’d upped the quality of his donation as he returned home with the self-same bottle of wine!

Special thanks go to Walsall Golf Club, the course was in superb condition and the hospitality was fantastic!
