Lady Vets Trophy

The Ladies Vets Trophy is an individual match play competition played over 9 holes for Ladies aged 70 and over starting in May and finishing in September.

The climax of the competition is the final which was played on Monday 9th September between Gail Hewitt and Anne Kennaugh. Though the weather had been a bit chilly in the morning it had warmed up and the sun was out when the match started. After lots of rain over the last few days the course was in good condition though the greens were slow which was not helped by the annual maintenance being carried out on them.

The first two holes were close with successful putts from Anne halving them both. Gail won the 3rd and 4th so was 2 up going into the 5th. Anne was unlucky on the 5th for her putt not to drop for a win so the hole was halved. Gail won the 6th with a great 2nd shot onto the green and two putts. Anne was unlucky with her 3rd shot onto the green which rolled back down the bank. All to play for on 7th with Gail being 3 up but Anne fought back with a great par.

I was just about to write a win for Anne when Gail’s long putt popped into the hole halving the 7th and giving her the match win 3 & 2.

Well done to both players for reaching the final and making it a very enjoyable competition for me as the referee with very few decisions to make!

Thanks to Pauline Cooke for acting as referee and supplying this report.
