The Ladies’ Club Championships took place on Saturday 7th June and Sunday 8th June.
Ten ladies competed in the 36-hole Scratch Championship with a further six ladies joining them on Sunday to compete over 18 holes for the nett Championship.
At the start of the day, the players were introduced on the first tee by Mr Lee Machin, the Men’s Captain.
At the close of play in the first round of the Scratch Championship, which saw the last group of four players finish their rounds in torrential rain, three players were tied on 84 (Laura Lawrence, Ruby Savage and Kate Thompson) with Anne Hollman-Bunn (86) two shots behind in fourth place and Poppy Smith (89) three shots further back in fifth place.
The weather for the second round was kinder on all the players with just the occasional shower to contend with. Poppy shot 94 to finish fifth on 183. The leading four players from day one played together in the second round and after nine holes there was only three shots between them: Laura leading by one from Ruby, two from Kate and three from Anne. In fact, all four players either led outright or shared the lead at different points during the final round. With three holes left to play the title was still up for grabs with only one shot separating them. (Laura 157, Ruby 157, Kate 157 and Anne 158).
Who would emerge victorious? Would there be a sudden death play-off to determine the Ladies’ Club Champion? Anne holed a long putt for birdie at 18 which leapfrogged her into the runners-up position ahead of Ruby and Kate (who tied for third place) courtesy of a better back 18 after they all finished on a total of 170. However, it was Laura who finished the strongest with pars at 16 and 18 sandwiching a birdie two at 17 for a second round 83 and a total of 167, giving her a three-shot victory and a first Club Championship title in 10 years. A truly titanic battle!
The second day saw a further six players join the nett Championship. All players were introduced on the first tee by Mr Ian Barber. After the 18 holes had been played, only eight shots separated the field. Three players returned nett 71s and, after the positions had been determined on countback, Karen Pearson finished fourth, the defending champion Michelle Parry finished third and this year’s runner-up is Pauline Cooke. This year’s nett Champion is Kerry Coulter who pipped everyone to the post with a nett 70.
Congratulations to both our 2025 Champions (see cover picture) and thanks to all the ladies who participated and helped to make it such a memorable weekend.
