Ladies’ Club Championships 2023

This year the Ladies’ Club Championships took place on Saturday 10th June on a very hot and humid day that later in the afternoon turned to rain and thunder, thankfully no lightning so we were able to continue the competition without interruption.

I am very pleased to report that two juniors took part in the nett competition this year. More of Hettie Walsh later in this report. Ruby Savage (playing handicap 15) demonstrated her ability with enthusiasm and has now been selected to represent the Ladies’ Scratch Team this season.

The morning started with five ladies competing in the first round of this year’s Scratch Championship against the course, the heat and each other.

All the ladies taking part in this year’s Championships had lunch together and then went out to play 18 holes in the afternoon competing for the Nett Championship (and the second round of the Scratch Championship).

The Scratch Championship was wide open after the first round with Anne Hollman-Bunn 84, Laura Lawrence 85 and Kate Thompson 85 all in contention. Laura led by two shots after five holes of the second round but eventually, Anne took control of affairs playing the last 13 holes in seven over par to return a score of 80 in the afternoon and secure this year’s title by 6 shots with a total of 164 (84, 80) from Laura who was runner up with a total of 170 (85, 85).

The Nett Championship was won by Hettie Walsh (See Picture below) with a fantastic nett 64, winning by five shots from the defending champion Linda Houston (nett 69 better back 9) followed by Ange Smith (nett 69). Hettie dropped six shots in the first two holes but steeled herself and played the last 16 holes in 13 over par to clinch the victory. A future Scratch Team player in waiting! Linda and Ange fought hard and both played to their handicaps in shooting nett 69s finishing runner-up and third respectively. See below for the full results.

Thank you to the 15 ladies that took part in this year’s Championships and to John Kelly for assisting with the smooth running of the day.

I’m looking forward to next year’s Championships already and to hopefully seeing more ladies participate.
