Greensomes Cup – Final
The Greensomes Cup Final, a pairs greensomes format was played on Thursday 2nd October between Deryck Hall & Ian Renhard and Clive Searle & Pete Baker.
It was an early morning start, kicking off the match in cool but dry conditions.
Clive and Pete sent a strong message that they meant business as they birdied the 1st hole. I never know if this is a good thing to happen or not…
They went 2 up after the 2nd hole, using one of their three shots.
The lead was quickly pulled back to all square after the 4th, where the dynamic duo of Deryck and Ian held their nerve with putts to win each hole. By the turn, after 9 holes, they were leading 2 up.
This lead was extended to 3 up after the 13th hole with steady play from Deryck and Ian.
However, the lead was soon eroded all the way to the 18th green, where Deryck left a 20 foot putt 6 feet short, and Ian couldn’t capitalise to end the match.
On the first play-off hole, both pairs hit good drives into the heart of the fairway and excellent second shots to the green. Unfortunately, both teams still needed to get up and down for par.
Ian was first to play and nearly chipped in from just off the green. Next, Clive had a tricky downhill chip, but the ball ran 10 feet past the hole. Pete had a putt for par but couldn’t convert. Meanwhile, now under tremendous pressure, Deryck managed to shake off those putting demons and sink a tricky 5 footer for par, securing their name on the Greensomes Cup.
Both pairs played in great friendly spirit, and it was a pleasure to referee this match.
Congratulations to Deryck & Ian on their win.
