REPORT ON THE FINAL OF THE VETS CUP – 20TH AUGUST 2025
The final of the VETS Cup (men over 70 years old) took place on Wednesday 20 August 2025 between Chris McHale pictured below on the left and Simon Appleby on the right. They achieved the Final having played 3 rounds involving 12 players.
The Final was played in ideal golf weather conditions; cooler then had been the case in the previous couple of weeks. Playing the course proved challenging for both players as good shots would roll for a long way, but with the slopes on some of the fairways not ending up where expected.
Our thanks go to the greenkeepers for maintaining the greens in such good conditions despite the dry weather.
Simon was giving Chris 3 shots on the day. The front nine were a back-and-forth battle with the match being all square after the 10th hole. The turning points were the 11th and 12th holes, with Chris on the 11th green bottom right making a 30-foot putt for a 2, with Simon holing for a 3.
On the 12th again Chris made a 25-foot putt for the hole. The next 3 holes were halved. Chris then won the 15th, making the match dormie 3. With the 16th ending up a half Chris won the match 3 and 2.
