SILVER APPROPRIATELY PICKS UP THE SILVERWARE
The additional roll and unpredictable bounce that has turned our parkland course into links-style golf caused several problems for the 9 men and 7 ladies contesting the fourth annual Endeavour Cup, a Mixed Stableford competition.
This event has been designed for higher handicappers who don’t normally enter the club’s trophy competitions. With a minimum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies, the emphasis for many competitors is on having fun even if there is silverware to be won.
The opening three-ball of Tony Hobbis, Terry Pagan and David Preece found the fast-running fairways and slow greens a tricky combination, with each playing above their handicap. The next group out fared little better. The early leader came from the third group when Trevor Grosvenor scored 33pts, only to be pipped by Lisa Smith with 35pts in the following group.
But it was the final group who provided the winner when Jill Silver having scored 19pts on the front 9 upped her game to record a back 9 of 21pts for a total of 40pts. This coincidentally was the same as last year’s winner, Susan Goode. Nominative determinism was clearly at play as Silver won the silverware. The cover photo shows her proudly holding the Endeavour Cup.
In addition to the main event, there were two nearest the pin competitions. At the 13th hole, nearest the pin in two was won by Roger Green (sleeve of balls) while Alistair Shadlock won a bottle of red wine for a fine tee shot at the 17th hole; he said it was the first time he’d been on the green at that hole.
The top three standings were:
1st Jill Silver 40pts
2nd Lisa Smith 35pts
3rd Trevor Grosvenor 33pts
Finally, my thanks go to the green keeping team who have done wonders in keeping the greens in such good condition considering the heatwave we’ve had over the last few weeks. It couldn’t have been easy.
