Endeavour Cup 22nd July 2025

IT’S A GOODE DAY OUT FOR SUSAN

 After a week of scorching temperatures, the milder weather came as welcome relief for the 19 men and ladies who played in the third annual Endeavour Cup, a Mixed Stableford competition.

This event has been designed for higher handicappers who don’t normally enter the club’s trophy competitions.  With a minimum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies, the emphasis for many competitors is on having fun even if there is silverware to be won.  As Alistair Shadlock commented after his round, “it is refreshing to play alongside players of a similar handicap rather than with those who are 10-20 shots better”.

The opening three-ball of Tony Hobbis, John Davidson and Alan Stadler found the fast running fairways and slow greens a tricky combination, and each recorded sub-30pts.

Paul Thomas was the early leader with 33pts, one clear of playing partner, Mike Waldram.  But his lead was short-lived as Alistair Shadlock came in with a steady 36pts.  Pamela Hopwood made a late bid for glory with 22pts on the back 9, the best of the day, but her front 9 of 13pts left her one shy of Alistair.

But it was the penultimate group who provided the winner when Susan Goode, having scored 22pts on the front 9 played steadily on the back 9 to record 40pts and romp home by four points. It was a truly Goode day out for Susan.   The cover photo shows her receiving the Endeavour Cup from Paul Stanford, Senior Men’s Captain.

In addition to the main event, there was a nearest the pin competition at the 7^th hole.  This was won by Andrew F Lee, known as Zim to his friends.
