Captains’ Day Saturday 16th August 2025
An entertaining day of golf and fun activities was thoroughly enjoyed by members and visitors on Captains’ Day which this year was given a “Las Vegas” theme and involved much more than just a competitive round of golf. A new approach by this year’s organising group meant that a range of generous sponsors arrived to staff their stalls and unfurl their banners.
Lead sponsors BYD had bought along five of their cars whilst Buggies4One were parked up beside the 18th green ready to be test driven by a highly colourful joker in the person of our very own Jude McManus! Passers-by were able to sample cosmetics, try out gym equipment, have their posture analysed, discuss therapies, or even plan their future care home arrangements!
Anne and John Wakelam donned their golden bowler hats and planned and manned the various games on the putting green and driving range. A team of volunteers supported them and also ran a number of raffles, whilst others ran the halfway refreshment tent and bar, a most welcome sight on what was a gloriously sun-soaked day. As always everyone had the Centre staff and the ground staff to thank for preparing the course and supporting the event on the day. Live music added to the happy vibe whilst the Las Vegas themed menu offers added to the day.
Captains Lee and Carolyn would like to thank everyone who contributed their time as volunteers to make the day a success, to the players who took part in the golf, and to other members and visitors who supported the day by taking part. The club was really buzzing during the afternoon as the results were announced.

Another purpose of the day was of course to raise money for the Captains’ charities, and thanks to the generosity of sponsors, and participants it can be announced that £2234 has been raised for this year’s charities, Prostate Cancer UK, and Bowel Research UK.
The organising group was led by Anne Wakelam and Jude Mcmanus who gave a great deal of their time and effort in putting the day together supported by Mark Laing and team BGC, and working along side Lee and Carolyn.

The golf competition was a Las Vegas Scramble. Teams of four had their chosen drive dictated by lady luck or should I say a “winking Elvis”. He was kinder to some than others!
