CAPTAINS’ DAY SATURDAY 15TH AUGUST 2026

CAPTAINS’ DAY SATURDAY 15TH AUGUST 2026

Overall

The feedback your Captains received on the day was overwhelmingly positive and an excellent time was had by both golfers and visitors who enjoyed not only the golf, but also the fun activities on offer. The day is only possible with the wonderful people who get behind it. The weather was a glorious sunny day which helped bring in a large number of visitors who added to the buzz of the day.

A Hole in One

However, for one particular golfer this was an unbelievable day, as Michelle Parry achieved her first hole in one on the 11th hole. Congratulation to Michelle (pictured below) on such a great achievement, which all golfers dream of, but only a few actually attain.

The Golf

The golf competition format was a Scramble with a twist, where each player had to forego 4 drives predetermined by the Captains, after which normal scramble rules applied. 74 players making up 19 teams competed in the competition, with first place going to the team of Ian Renhard, Deryck Hall, Richard Baller and Paul Stanford, scoring a Nett 49.5.  See  main cover photograph.

The Gross competition was won by the team of Ryan Coy, Richard Shirley, Nick Tilsley and Ray Cole with a Gross score of 60. A full list of players and scores is attached.

Best Gross Ray, Nick and Richard, Ryan was unavailable.

In addition to the Scramble there were nearest the pin for the ladies on the 7th hole won by Jude McManus, for the men on the 16th hole won by Paul Stanford and on the 18th hole a straightest drive won by Sharon Easton-Pollock.

We also had a team mulligan on offer and the prize draw went to John Newnes and team.

Given all the dry weather we had the course was challenging to play, but thanks also goes to the greenskeepers who had done a great job in maintain the greens leading to some good scores all round.

Fun Activities

Our fun activities were open to all and comprised a nearest the pin game on the Trackman for under 16s and over 16s, on the putting green a darts game for under 12s and over 12s, and for the youngsters amongst us a “just for fun” chipping game, although the latter seemed to appeal to all ages.

A big big thank you goes to Anne Wakelam, John Wakelam and David Jackson for managing these games during the day, and without whose help the day could not have run so successfully. The winners of the Trackman and putting green games were as follows

Trackman U16s  Harry Stanton 7ft 7in

Trackman Over 16s  Lisa Smith 15ft 11in

Putting Darts U12s  Finley Solomon Scoring 200

Putting Darts Over 12s  Adam Thompson Scoring 400

We also ran a very well supported raffle ably helped by Mary Robinson and Annoesjka Plummer, so a big thanks also goes to these helpers. We also thank Midlands Golf who supported the raffle with a number of donations to the prizes up for grabs. The raffle had over 50 prizes.

Our Sponsors

As part of the day, we were able to obtain sponsorship of holes across the course from a number of local businesses, namely, Banners Restaurant, Branded 4U, Bromsgrove & Redditch Trophies, Ideal Fish & Chips, Star Legal, The Golf PT and Traditional Healing Arts, their support is greatly appreciated.

In addition, we included all sponsor in a special Captains’ Day brochure setting out our support for Alzheimer’s Society and Parkinsons UK, which were distributed to golfers and visitors throughout the day. We hope you picked up a copy.

Entertainment and Refreshment

Between 2 and 4 pm we had live music which was very well received from vocalist Adam Higgins . Incidentally Adam is also responsible for the BGC website design. (Arden Studios)

We must of course thank the Centre staff for their support and for the restaurant staff for feeding and watering all golfers and visitors throughout the day, especially with the tasty afternoon Barbeque.

Final Thanks

Captains Stephanie and Gary would like to repeat their thanks to everyone who contributed their time to make the day a success, to the players who took part in the golf, and to the staff, other members and visitors who supported the day by taking part.

The Charities.

A key purpose of the day was of course to raise money for the Captains’ charities, and thanks to the generosity of sponsors, and participants it can be announced that £1,400 has been raised for this year’s charities, Alzheimer’s Society and Parkinsons UK.
